This was a solid three-star read for me—easy to get through, but not something that really stuck.
One by One is the kind of thriller you pick up when you don’t want to think too hard. It pulls you in quickly because it’s very straightforward. The writing is simple, the chapters are short, and the pacing makes it easy to keep going. I found myself flipping pages without much effort, which I always appreciate—especially when I just want something fast and bingeable.
The setup is very familiar: a group of people stuck together, tension building, and the constant feeling that anyone could be hiding something. It leans heavily into that classic “everyone is a suspect” trope, which does keep things engaging. I enjoyed trying to piece things together and paying attention to small details, even if I’ve seen this kind of structure many times before.
That’s also where the book falls a little flat for me.
Because while it’s entertaining in the moment, it doesn’t really offer anything new. If you’ve read a lot of thrillers—especially closed-circle mysteries—you’ll probably see the patterns early on. I kept waiting for something that would really surprise me or shift the story in a bigger way, but it never quite got there.
The pacing in the beginning worked really well, but toward the end, it started to feel a bit dragging. Not in a major way, but enough that I became more focused on getting answers than actually enjoying the buildup. The tension was there, but the payoff didn’t hit as strongly as I wanted it to.
This also didn’t feel like Freida McFadden at her best. I’ve read other books from her that had stronger twists or more memorable moments, and this one just didn’t leave the same impact.
Still, I wouldn’t say it’s a bad read.
It’s the kind of book that:
But once it’s over, it doesn’t really stay with you.
