This was a 4-star read for me, but I had to sit with it for a while to fully appreciate what it was doing.
At first, I was honestly confused. My mind drifted more than once, and I kept feeling like I was missing something. The way the story is told isn’t straightforward at all—it feels fragmented, disorienting, almost like you’re trying to piece things together while half-asleep.
But then it clicked.
And when it did, it hit hard.
Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin isn’t meant to be read smoothly or comfortably. That confusion? It’s intentional. It mirrors panic, guilt, and that desperate attempt to make sense of things when it’s already too late. Once I understood that, everything started to fall into place.
At its core, this is a story about motherhood and fear. That constant need to protect your child. That belief that if you’re just careful enough, watchful enough, you can prevent something bad from happening. The idea of “rescue distance” really stayed with me—it perfectly captures that anxiety, that invisible line you’re always trying to maintain.
What unsettled me the most is that the horror isn’t supernatural.
It’s environmental. It’s neglect. It’s denial. It’s adults making choices that are easier instead of taking responsibility. The children in this story aren’t monsters—they’re victims. And that realization makes everything heavier.
Carla, in particular, was disturbing in a quiet way. Not because she’s cruel, but because she’s adapted. She’s normalized something that should never be normal. That idea—that survival sometimes means accepting something horrifying—felt more unsettling than anything else in the book.
This isn’t an easy read. It’s not meant to be. But once it settles in, the dread lingers.
