In this Dear Debbie review, I’m sharing my thoughts on Freida McFadden’s latest psychological thriller—and one that surprised me more than I expected.
I started Dear Debbie pretty casually, listening to the audiobook while I worked instead of sitting down to analyze every clue. Rather than trying to solve the mystery or predict the twist, I simply let the story unfold at its own pace.
Maybe that’s exactly why the reveal worked so well on me.
Or maybe I was just distracted. LOL
Either way, when everything finally came together, I genuinely didn’t see it coming. It was refreshing to read a thriller without constantly trying to outsmart the author.
One thing I also enjoyed was the use of multiple POVs. I wasn’t expecting them. They added more depth and gradually built tension without making the mystery feel complicated. Each perspective revealed another piece of the puzzle, making it easy to stay invested while still keeping me curious about where everything was heading.
The characters were easily my favorite part of the book. They felt layered, flawed, and believable, with motivations that made sense even when I didn’t agree with their choices. Rather than existing solely to push the plot forward, they made the mystery feel grounded and gave the story real emotional weight.
I also liked how the Dear Debbie advice column was woven into the novel. It gave more insight into Debbie’s personality while reinforcing one of the book’s central ideas: what happens when someone who’s spent years telling other people to do the right thing finally decides she’s had enough.
After spending the last few months reading horror, this ended up being the perfect palate cleanser. It still delivered suspense, but in a way that felt lighter, more accessible, and incredibly easy to read.
Honestly, I don’t have many complaints about this one.
The only reason it took me a few days to finish was because my own energy had been low lately—not because the story dragged. In fact, one of the book’s strengths is how approachable it is. The pacing stays steady, the mystery is easy to follow, and the story never becomes overly complicated.
If I had one small criticism, it’s that readers looking for an extremely intricate, mind-bending thriller may find this a little more straightforward. The novel spends just as much time developing its characters as it does building the mystery, and while that worked for me, it may not satisfy readers looking for nonstop twists.
Dear Debbie delivers exactly what it promises: an entertaining psychological thriller with relatable characters, multiple perspectives, and a satisfying twist.
What I enjoyed most wasn’t just the mystery itself—it was watching an ordinary woman reach her breaking point. Freida McFadden balances suspense, dark humor, and moral ambiguity in a way that keeps you invested without making the story feel overly heavy.
If you’re looking for a character-driven thriller that’s engaging, approachable, and easy to binge, Dear Debbie is definitely worth picking up.
